Ear infections seem to be a pretty common illness amongst babies and children. Sadly, I often hear of so many young children battling ear infection after ear infection. Ear infections are not fun, to say the least, they are painful and seem to have a habit of frequent returns in some kids. Here are some powerful natural ear infection remedies that you can use and see amazing results.

What really is an ear infection?

Ear infections, also known as otitis media is an infection of the “middle ear”. The middle ear is a small air pocket that is between your child’s outer ear and the eardrum.

Middle ear infections are when there is a bacterial or viral infection in the ear. The infection then causes inflammation in the middle ear region, resulting in a buildup of fluid which then can have trouble draining out.

Inside the ear, there is also a eustachian tube. These tubes have a specific job of draining any fluid out of the ear. When an infection is present those tubes often have a hard time doing their job. Due to inflammation, they don’t work well, resulting in an ear infection.

What causes ear infections?

Ear infections can happen for an array of different reasons. Here are some causes for ear infections:

  • A foreign object inside the ear
  • Common cold and congestion or some kind of virus
  • Allergies
  • Recurrent antibiotic prescriptions
  • Sinus infection
  • Pneumonia

If you suspect a foreign object in your child’s ear, take them to the doctor immediately.

Does my child need antibiotics?

One of the common answers to ear infections seems to be antibiotics. It seems like kids get an ear infection, then a prescribed antibiotic and the ear infection returns with more vengeance.

This then becomes the circle of events where the child is then in a constant battle with ear infection after ear infection.

Often times, earaches aren’t even caused by bacteria, therefore antibiotics are completely useless anyway! Ear infections often go away on their own and within 2-10 days.

I am so sad when I see children get prescribed antibiotics SO many different times when dealing with an ear infection because it is actually making the situation much worse for the child involved.

With so many ear infections caused by viruses, the infection won’t even respond to an antibiotic and even bacterial ear infections can often be resolved using natural remedies and avoiding any prescribed medication. 90% of ear infections, even bacterial ones, will resolve spontaneously.

Otoscope looking into ear for infection

One more thing to add is that when a child is frequently given antibiotics, their body will create an “antibiotic resistance” which can lead to other long-term health problems.

Antibiotics also lower the immune system which is not what you want when your body is fighting an infection.

I think one of the main reasons so many antibiotics are prescribed for ear infections is because doctors want to have the parent leave satisfied and send them home with a “solution”.

Some doctors will prescribe an antibiotic but will tell the parent to “watch and wait” to fill it. I think this is a much better approach and I can guarantee that 9 times out of 10 those mothers don’t even end up needing to fill that prescription.

If possible, avoid antibiotics and try these natural ear infection remedies first.

Buy an otoscope

A little tip for you is to buy an otoscope and become familiar with what a healthy eardrum should look like. I can assure you that this purchase will save you time and money. It will also save some unneeded pediatric visits when you aren’t certain whether you are dealing with an ear infection or not.

The key to this is to look into your child’s ear when they are feeling good and learn what an eardrum looks like. This way, if you suspect an ear infection you can check it out yourself.

Please note, it is important to ensure that your child’s eardrum is NOT ruptured. If you suspect that it is ruptured, please consult your doctor.

1. Garlic Mullein Oil

Garlic mullein oil is a must-have ear infection remedy. You can easily find it online or even at your local natural grocery store. Some mommas like to make their own garlic oil too. For me, I find it easiest to have a premade oil on hand, if I ever need it. Plus, it is super easy to administer to your child.

Garlic has so many different antibiotic and antiviral properties, that in my opinion, it is much safer and more effective than a prescribed antibiotic. Not only that, but you will be amazed at how it will get your child feeling better in no time.

How to use:

Warm up the bottle by running it under some warm tap water and then put 1-2 drops straight into the affected ear(s) two or three times a day.

Encourage your child to lay down for a few minutes to help keep the drops in.

2. Essential Oils

I have a few favorite essential oils go-to’s for earaches. Essential oils are a really great ear infection remedy for your child that is soothing, effective and non-invasive.

I like to use lavender, melaleuca, and basil for treating and providing comfort and relief when dealing with ear pain.

The DoTerra pre-diluted roller balls are my favorite, they are ready for application and easy to apply. I like to put the oils on, around and behind the ear and also down the neck. However, don’t put the oils directly into the ear.

How to use:

If you don’t have the pre-diluted rollers, you could add a drop or two to a cotton ball and do a similar thing. You could also place the cotton ball just inside the ear opening too.

The best way to use these three different oils is to pair lavender up with both melaleuca and basil and then rotate them. The lavender will help soothe and relax your child while the other two oils will work their magic in getting rid of the ear infection.

3. Ferrum Phosphoircum

This homeopathic medicine is the perfect ear infection remedy. Ferrum Phosphoircum targets the eustachian tube, acting as an anti-inflammatory, Ferrum helps the trapped fluid drain out of the ear. This, in turn, reduces the inflamed ear canal and helps alleviate pain and pressure.

How to use:

Give Ferrum Phosphoircum (you can find this online or at a health food store) and give 3 pellets every 3-4 hours.

Homeopathics work best when taken isolated away from food or drink. Try leaving 10 minutes on either side of giving this homeopathic remedy to your child.

4. Chiropractic care:

You may be wondering, how an earth chiropractic care can help cure an ear infection but to be honest it is one of the best ear infection remedies out there.

Not only can chiropractic care help with an ear infection, but it can also prevent them from reoccurring.

I could go into a whole lot of detail about this one, but to keep things short and simple, chiropractic care involves manipulating and adjusting the body so that the skeleton is in alignment and can function properly.

As stated before, ear infections are usually when the eustachian tubes cannot drain any fluid build-up out of the ear canal effectively. Babies and children can often be out of alignment. Whether it be through birth, or trauma, (like falling and hitting their head) misalignments through the spine can cause the muscle that contracts the eustachian tubes to not fire properly.

Chiropractic care can find the source of the problem and treat that, instead of treating the symptoms. Definitely don’t underestimate the power of getting your child adjusted.

5. Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver has many amazing properties and is a good thing to keep on hand in your medicine cupboard. Sovereign Silver is a good choice of colloidal silver.

Colloidal silver is safe and effective so you can use this in conjunction with other remedies or for additional support if you feel they need it.

How to use:

There are a couple of different ways to use colloidal silver to effectively treat an earache.

You can either put 2-3 drops on a cotton ball and place just inside their ears, or you can drop 1 or 2 drops directly into the ear, one to two times per day.

Depending on the age of your child, it would depend on how many drops and how frequent.

If you have a baby, I would stick to one drop once a day and then go up from there if your child is older.

6. Use heat:

Heat can be soothing and help alleviate pain when your child is dealing with an ear infection. This ear infection remedy is simple, easy and can be done as many times as needed throughout the day.

Simply warm a heating pad, these cute small ones are perfect for little kiddos as they are just their size. Let them lie down and rest their ear on it.

This would be a good idea to do while relaxing or even watching a movie.

7. Oscillococcinum

Sometimes an ear infection is paired with a fever. I know fevers can be scary, but it is important to take the time to learn and understand why you shouldn’t be scared of fevers. They are actually beneficial for your child’s body, especially when fighting off an infection.

Oscillococcinum is the homeopathic flu medicine but is also a MUST if your child is developing an ear infection. I like to have a big stock of these in my house. If you can administer this ear infection remedy at the onset of symptoms that is going to be your best bet!

How to use:

Give 1-3 vials over a 24 hour period, preferably isolated from food and drink for at least 10 minutes either side.

8. Add in raw dairy

You may have heard that it is best for your child to cut dairy out of their diet while dealing with an ear infection. Well, while that might be the best practice for some, usually it is referring to pasteurized dairy products rather than raw dairy.

Raw dairy products are a powerhouse for your body and can offer so many great health benefits. Being a regular consumer of raw milk, well when I say regular I mean every single day I can definitely attest to that truth.

Raw dairy products for ear infections

My toddler has been so healthy, and I know that the raw dairy in his diet contributes heavily to his health.

Children who consume raw dairy products are said to have lowered inflammation resulting in little to no ear infections.  Dr. Von Hauner’s Children’s Hospital, reports that fresh cow’s milk protects young children from respiratory infections, febrile illness and inflammation of the middle ear (source).

9. Acupressure

One of the easiest ear infection remedies is finding some acupressure points on your child and applying pressure. The large intestine acupressure point is an effective place to start as it strengthens the immune system, while also helping ear infections and fevers.

How do I do it?

It is easy, trust me! The large intestine pressure point is on the hand, in the webspace between the thumb and fingers. Put your thumb and finger on either side of the pressure point of their hand and apply even, firm but gentle pressure. You can make small circular motions while keeping the pressure. Do this for a few minutes.

Here is a small video, if you are a visual learner like me!
