Essential oils have so many different uses and purposes. They are something you don’t want to be without.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of different ways, including aromatically, topically and even internally.

There are so many oils out there, it can sometimes be overwhelming to know where to start.

I am going to share with you the 9 best essential oils for beginners.

Growing up, I was always familiar with essential oils.

My Mum was a big lover of them, well she still is! As I have become an adult, wife, and mother myself, I have also come to love essential oils more.

With their natural and powerful benefits, oils are used daily in our home.

What essential oils should I buy?

It is important to make sure you are using oils that are pure and labeled CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade).

This will ensure they are the purest and highest quality of oil on the market.

You need to do your own research on the essential oil company that you decide to purchase from.

It is good to ensure they are taking precautions that provide the best quality of oil.

Research where they source their oils from.

Do they test their oils for adulteration and contamination? Lastly, does the company provide transparency by requiring a third-party test for each oil with published results?

These three things can help you decide an essential oil company that will provide you with safe and pure oils for your family.

The best 9 essential oils for beginners

The selection of essential oils is pretty endless.

Whether you are a beginner and are just getting familiar with essential oils or if oils are something you already love, this list will hopefully provide you with some great information.

Each of these oils are versatile in their uses and can help with so many different problems and promote a healthy lifestyle.

1. Lavender

Lavender is probably one of those essential oils you may be most familiar with or at least heard of.

Most commonly known for, lavender promotes feelings of calm and relaxation.

It is a powerful tool in aiding restful sleep and reducing feelings of tension and stress.

Calming properties are not the only benefits of lavender, this oil is also great for moisturizing the skin and treating sunburns.

Options for use:

You could add a few drops to a diffuser to enjoy lavender aromatically or add it into a bath for relaxation. Every night I use Doterra’s Lavender Touch blend and run it down by baby’s spine, and then lotion him to promote restful sleeping.

2. Melaleuca

Also known as Tea Tree, Melaleuca is another must-have essential oil.

Being high in purification and cleansing properties, melaleuca is a great anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory oil.

Melaleuca is a great “first aid” oil that can be used on cuts and scrapes to prevent infection and promote healthy healing.

Options for use

Melaleuca Can be applied neat (without dilution) straight onto the affected area.

It can also be taken internally for an immune stimulant and digestive support.

3. Frankincense

Frankincense has a wide variety of powerful uses and benefits. It has the ability to rejuvenate skin and help treat skin blemishes.

This oil also promotes cellular health and immunity and reduces inflammation.

Along with those benefits, frankincense also provides a healthy immune and nervous system when taken internally.

Frankincense is the best oil you could choose for bone healing.

It helps boost the production of collagen, which is needed in bone repair, along with reducing nerve pain and avoiding infection.

My 17 month old just broke his leg a week ago and we were able to apply frankincense oil to the affected area before he got his leg cast.

Options for use

Frankincense can be used directly onto the affected area without dilution. If desired, you could mix it with fractionated coconut oil or unscented lotion.

You could add frankincense to your normal daily facial care routine to promote healthier skin and combat skin blemishes and wrinkles.

For internal use, place 1-2 drops under the tongue or take in a capsule.

4. Lemon

Lemon boasts a clean, fresh, citrus scent that is enticing and invigorating.

It is commonly known for its purifying purposes and has distinct cleansing and deodorizing properties.

This makes it a great choice for cleaning surfaces and purifying the air.

Not only does it have benefits for the home, but it can also aid in digestion and support a healthy respiratory system when taken internally.

Lemon can also be used to boost your immune system or can be added to a hot herbal drink to soothe a sore throat or cough.

Options for use

Add a few drops to a diffuser to enjoy the aromatic benefits. You could create your own all-purpose cleaner using lemon essential oil.

Adding a couple of drops to boiling water and raw honey can be a great remedy to soothe a sore throat.

Lemon can also be added to a glass of water to offer a nice lemon-flavored drink while receiving the many benefits of taking it internally.

5. Peppermint

The benefits of using peppermint oil are endless. With its minty, fresh, herbaceous scent, peppermint promotes healthy respiratory function, naturally repels bugs, enhances digestive health, and is a great anti-inflammatory.

Peppermint can be an effective and quick relief for headaches.

Its cooling properties can help your head feel clearer and help get rid of any unwanted headaches or migraines.

Peppermint can also be a great remedy in aiding an upset stomach and eliminating nausea.

While pregnant, I would apply peppermint to the back of my neck and also inhale it intermittently from the bottle, this really helped in alleviating my morning sickness and nausea.

Another great tool peppermint essential oil has to offer, is that it is a natural fever reducer.

The few times my child has experienced a fever, I was able to use peppermint to help bring down the fever and allow him to feel more comfortable.

I told you the benefits of peppermint essential oil were endless, I wasn’t joking!

Natural remedies for headache

Options for use

Peppermint can be a great oil to add to your diffuser along with some other single oils or blends to create a fresh and invigorating smell.

For muscle aches or anti-inflammatory reasons, apply directly on the site with or without dilution.

When using peppermint to treat headaches, simply apply to the temples of your forehead and or along your forehead as desired.

For internal use, either apply one or two drops under the tongue or take in capsules.

Taking internally can also alleviate stomach upset.

In regards to treating fevers, I like to use the Doterra’s peppermint touch blend because it is already prediluted- perfect for little ones.

Apply it to the soles of each foot to help bring down the fever.

If you have a younger baby, a heavier dilution might be necessary.

6. Helichrysum

Helichrysum is well known for its restorative properties to the skin especially in renewing scar tissue and skin blemishes.

With its effective pain treatment and a natural coagulant, frankincense is a great oil to add to your first aid kit.

Options for use

Apply 1 drop of helichrysum on a cut to stop the bleeding. Helichrysum promotes healing, reduces scarring and rejuvenate tissue.

You can mix helichrysum with a carrier oil or lotion to apply onto skin and face. Just be sure to avoid areas such as eyes, inner ears, and other sensitive areas.

For internal use, you can take it in capsules or dilute one drop in four ounces of liquid.

7. Oregano

Oregano is a powerful antioxidant. It also aids in immune function and health and supports digestion.

This essential oil can also be helpful in providing relief for menstrual cramps. It is a great go-to for viral infections and is anti-bacterial.

When you’re using it topically, dilute it with a 1:3 ratio (1 drop of essential oil to at least 3 drops of a carrier oil). You can use a heavier dilution for children and those with sensitive skin.

Then apply directly to the affected area.

Oregano can also be used as a flavor for cooking and can be diluted or taken in capsules to receive the benefits internally.

8. Basil

Not only is basil a great cooking herb, but it also has many great benefits for the body. Basil can help reduce feelings of tension and help with stress relief.

Basil is also a great soother for insect bites and stings and can also is able to provide pain relief and fight off infection.

It may be surprising, but basil is a great essential oil in treating an earache or infection.

Options for use

Basil can be applied neat to the skin, but use with a carrier oil or unscented lotion for children.

You can add basil to your favorite Italian recipe for an extra tasty dinner. Basil can also be taken internally or diffused.

To treat earaches, add one drop of each basil and melaleuca to a cotton ball. Gently place the cotton ball just barely in the ear opening (do not push down into canal) and leave for 30 minutes.

You can also use the cotton ball to massage behind the ears and down the neck.

9. Copaiba

Copaiba is a great anti-inflammatory and natural pain reliever. This oil can be used to help muscle aches, joint pain, headaches, and any trauma.

An uncomfortable teething baby can be instantly soothed with the application of copaiba. Copaiba is also a great emotional support and can be used when stressed or tense.

Options for use

Copaiba can be applied directly to the affected area. To take internally, add one drop in a beverage or take in a capsule.

Aiding pain associated with teething you can add copaiba to a carrier oil and rub along your baby’s jawline.

For immediate and most effective relief, I would put a very small dab on my finger and apply directly onto the sore gum. It would work perfectly!

Essential oils can be very powerful and are provide an endless list of benefits.

Having just a few of these oils can really be a great addition to your natural remedy selection.
